You Got One Year Sober? What Happens Now?

One year sober is a big milestone, and it’s a cause for celebration. You’ve gone through the initial stages of getting sober, and sobriety is now more of a habit, but what happens now?
Here’s what you can expect after you reach the one-year sober milestone.
Your Physical Health has Improved
Addiction takes a heavy toll on your physical health. When you finally kick that habit and get a year down the road, you will find you look and feel better.
You’ll feel stronger overall, and since your diet is much healthier, you’ll find you’re not suffering from nutritional deficiencies, and you feel stronger in general.
Your Mental Health is Much Improved Too!
There’s a lot of damage to your mental health and cognitive functioning that addiction to drugs or alcohol causes. After a year of sobriety, you’ll find you’re thinking more clearly, you can remember things better, and you can focus and make decisions better.
Those feelings of anxiety and depression that were likely a part of your life after the first few months of sobriety are now gone. You’ll also likely find that you have a renewed zest for life.
You’re more productive at work, and you’ve reengaged with your family and friends. You feel more like your life has purpose again.
New Friends are Part of Your Life
After adopting a sober lifestyle, you changed the kind of friends you hang out with, and that makes a huge difference in your life. You’re now hanging with people who genuinely care about you and support your sober lifestyle.
They help you as you discover a new purpose for your life, and they are there when you feel down. These people are your true friends, and they’ve got your back.
You Feel More Confident
After one year sober, you feel much more confident. You’ve survived a deadly disease and successfully accomplished one of the most courageous feats you’ll ever face.
You have a new sense of inner strength, and you feel free from the shackles of addiction. That is a great way to build up your self-confidence. If you can free yourself from addiction, you truly can do anything!
You’re More Financially Stable
As an active addict, you might have lost your job and spent all of your money. That’s a very common scenario, but now that you’ve got a year clean, you’re on the road to financial recovery as well.
You’re more financially stable now, and you’re productive in your job. You’ve also likely moved past many of the financial obligations you may have incurred as an addict, such as the costs and legal matters associated with a DUI. You may even have gotten a promotion at work!
You Feel Hopeful
The return of hope to your life is one of the best benefits of getting sober. You now feel like there’s a good reason to be alive and that good things are coming your way!
There’s much more to look forward to in the future, and you also know that you can accomplish even something as difficult as staying sober. That’s a good reason to feel hopeful!
